Dancing into My 70’s Chair
Materials: Chair with assemblage and fabric collage
Size:
Price: (Commissioned for a 70th Birthday.)
I created this chair for a longtime friend who was a little apprehensive about reaching her seventies.
I designed a woman dancing through life to remind her of how others see her.
The chair is for daily use at the mirrored dressing table in her master bedroom, therefore the design is placed on the chair back facing into the room
I painted the wood the same buttermilk white as her dressing table, and chose rich brown and gold Chinese brocade for the seat cover. I used the same material for the dancer’s dress. To create a swirl of movement I picked up the gold colour for accents on both dancer and chair legs.
Title: Hooked Mirror
Materials: Wool, hessian, wood and mirror glass
Size:
Price: $500
This mirror arose from a challenge. A friend found an antique rug kit in our local thrift store with this design printed on the backing. Since it was too frail to make, she challenged six of us to use the design.
Since I dislike tripping over small rugs I decided to transform it. I spotted a mirror in the thrift store and realized it was the same size as the middle of the rug. I therefore I planned to hook only the outside of the design and cut away the central panel. A plywood frame created the backing and the mirror was mounted in the middle.
The large triangles in the original rug design reminded me of the Art Nouveau period so I anchored this design feature with the Art Nouveau colours of green, orange, and yellow. I strengthen the Art Nouveau theme by adding green and yellow triangles into what had originally been a plain border. Since the rug would now hang on the wall I used textured wool for the centre of the roses; the filaments stand out like stamens.
Wishing For my Spring Garden
Materials: Painted chair with hand worked wool tapestry seat
Size: 17 ½” w x 15”d x 34”h
Price: $500
When moving, a friend gave me a barely started tapestry cushion cover complete with the wools to complete it. She’d had it for years and decided it was one of those projects she was never going to finish.
I love nasturtiums so was delighted. I spent the rest of the winter finishing the cover and planning where to plant nasturtiums in my garden.
I used the cover to upholster an antique chair I’d painted black. I then painted a flowering of nasturtiums over the back and front of the chair — it’s now the perfect place to sit while daydreaming over Gardening Catalogues.
Winter Dreaming Chair
Size:
Price: $500
This chair was discovered in several pieces, on a roadside on Mayne Island. FREE said an attached label. Since all the pieces were there, and the wood was in good shape I collected it and refinished it.
Bar chairs always remind me of photos of Mexican resorts — the sort you dream about in the middle of a Canadian winter.
The red paint represents the heat of the Mexican sun and the woven seat the palapas. I added wooden Bird of Paradise flowers, and painted garlands of tropical vegetation to suggest an exotic winter getaway. This is the place to perch in the middle of a harsh winter day, sip a margarita and pretend you’re there!
(I can supply a margarita recipe)

Pie Crust Table
Materials: Painted side table with papier mache assemblage
Size:
Price: $450
My Grandmother owned a similar table to this. As a child I was always told: “Don’t touch Grandma’s pie crust table.”
I would look at the polished wood in bafflement and think — but it doesn’t have a pie on it!” When a friend gave me this one, I laughed, immediately took it to the studio, painted the pie and made the pie slice. Now it really is a piecrust table!

Wishing Over Laundry - Coffee Table -Top Detail showing Poem
Materials: Painted coffee table with poem
Size:
Price: $400
I love seeing, hearing and smelling, clothes dance on a washing line: the sculptural forms, the rhythmic snaps, and the fresh soapy fragrance. But it’s hard work and Moms often wish for a little romance while pegging laundry. This ‘poem table’ honours that thought.

First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have this wish I wish tonight.”
It’s a full sized chair so is big enough for adults or children.
